The President, Society For Peace Studies and Practice, SPSP, Mr Nathaniel Msen Awuapila, fspsp, on behalf of the National Working Committee, (NWC), the Central Working Committee,(CWC), the Board of Trustees,(BOT), the Body of Fellows,(BoF), and Esteemed Members of the SPSP, commiserate with the immediate family and the Nigerian academic Community at large, on the death of Prof Nuhu Yaqub, fspsp on Saturday, 4th January, 2025 at the age of 73 in Abuja. Family sources say, Prof who died after a brief illness in Abuja was buried same day (4th January, 2025) at Gudu Cemetery, Abuja. The President, SPSP ,described Prof Nuhu Yaqub as an erudite scholar who belongs to the class of Eminent Fellows of the SPSP, that deserve to be honoured. He noted that the late Prof Yaqub's love for the SPSP remained unquenchable and prayed for the repose of the Soul of Prof Emeritus Nuhu Yaqub.
The Late Prof Yaqub was the Chairman, Academic Advisory Board of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies( NILDS) Abuja from 2019 until his death on Saturday, 4th January, 2025.
He was Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja, 2004 -2009 and also served as Vice Chancellor, Sokoto State University, 2012- 2017. He became a full Professor in 1998 at the Usumanu Dan-Fodio University, Sokoto and retired from service of the University in 2021 after putting in 23 years on the rank and upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years for Professors in Nigeria. In addition to being a Marxist Scholar, Late Prof Yaqub specialised in comparative politics and is a theorist who was a leading scholar in all his academic research areas in Nigeria. Late Prof Nuhu Yaqub is reputed to have presented about 40 seminar and conference papers including public lectures with about 90 published works. Two of such published works are: 1) "Marxism and the End of History and the Last Man Ideology " ; published in 2010 and 2) "Neo-Colonialism,Leadership and African Development " ; published in 2012.
