The Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) is pleased to share the highlights from a landmark event held at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria — the groundbreaking ceremony for the Okechukwu Onuchukwu Building, which will house the newly established Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.
Representing the Society at the ceremony were Mr. Nathaniel Msen Awuapila, fspsp, President of SPSP, and Dr. O. N. Neji, fspsp, Vice President (South). The event was held in honour of Professor Okechukwu Onuchukwu, Vice Chancellor of IAUE, and coincided with the celebration of his 60th birthday.
The ceremony also featured the public presentation of a commemorative book titled “Perspectives on Nigeria’s Development: Essays in Honour of Prof. Okechukwu Onuchukwu,” highlighting his remarkable contributions to academia and national development.
In recognition of his leadership and commitment to peacebuilding, Prof. Onuchukwu was formally presented with his Fellowship Certificate by the SPSP — a decoration initially slated for 2024. He was also honoured with a special birthday gift from the Society, signifying the SPSP's appreciation for his continued support and collaboration.
The successful laying of the foundation stone for the Institute is a major milestone, not just for IAUE, but for the broader vision of institutionalizing peace and conflict studies across Nigeria and the African continent.
We extend profound appreciation to Prof. Isaac Olawale Albert, the founding father of the SPSP, for his tireless dedication and foundational role in actualizing this initiative. His unwavering commitment continues to inspire the growth and impact of the Society.
This Institute promises to serve as a hub for academic excellence, research, and transformative dialogue on peace, conflict resolution, and sustainable development in Nigeria and beyond.
Dr. Obi Ndifon Neji, fspsp
