Society for Peace Studies and Practice (Abuja Branch Election of New Executive Members) 29/06/2024

The meeting started around 15:06hrs by the Chairman Electoral Committee, Cmdt. David Idowu Ojelabi mni, spsp and ably supported by Mr. Akinwunmi Akintayo, a strong pillar of the branch in Abuja and supervised by National Executive member, in the person of Mrs. Grace Abosede Ladokun. 

The chairman mentioned that this election ought to have taken place 2-3 years ago and he recently got the mandate to conduct the election after the outgoing executive members were asked to step aside during an online meeting. 

He expressed concern about the very comatose status of the branch and that something must be done to change the present situation to position the branch in the place where it belongs. He promised after the election to connect and give the new Executive Members contacts of other fellow members of the society in Abuja and also announced that the newest Fellow in town is the present Inspector General of Police in Nigeria, IGP Kayode Egbetokun. 

He also requested that the branch be well represented in the forthcoming National Conference happening next week in Nigeria Defence Academy, Kaduna. 

He added that the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) should actively be involved in society activities and suggested that an Office secretariat should be domiciled in the IPCR Headquarters complex because she is a very important stakeholder.

Commandant Ojelabi advised that the SPSP Abuja branch should be domiciled structurally in the University of Abuja, to accommodate fresh members from the academic community and reiterated that all past and present stakeholders must be carried along in this new dispensation. 

Around 15:34hrs, the newly elected Chairman of the branch made his inaugural address after briefly introducing himself as the Director of the Institute of Peace and Leadership Studies at the University of Abuja and also a Senior Lecturer in the Political Sciences Department of the same university.

Professor Olasupo Mutiulla  expressed his heartfelt gratitude and stated that; It’s a great opportunity and honor to serve in this capacity as the branch chairman having served under Commandant Ojelabi as a Vice Chairman under his chairmanship of the branch a few years ago along with the National Executive member Grace Ladokun, I am bringing cognitive expertise from the academy community with the assistant of my team to 

1. Re-awake the branch

2. Place the branch in the leading role where she belongs 

3. Re-install the lost glory of the branch after Commandant Ojelabi left the Executive Chairmanship position. 

He extended congratulations to the other newly elected executive members and admonished that we all put effort together for the sake of humanity and to rescue the country from the calamitous security situation. 

He promised to garner the postgraduates, graduates, and other individuals through collective responsibility and curbed the menace of insecurity in Abuja and extension Nigeria. 

The handing-over date will be announced subsequently by the Electoral Committee after consultation with the outgoing executive members to ensure proper documentation during the handing-over exercise.
